What is vehicle excise tax?

Vehicle excise tax is a tax imposed by local or state governments for owning or using a vehicle. It is often calculated based on the vehicle’s value, age, and location of registration.

Who is responsible for paying the excise tax on my vehicle?

Your lease agreement stipulates that the lessee (you) is responsible for paying all taxes and fees associated with the vehicle.

How do I know how much excise tax I owe?

Your town/city will bill CULA directly for the amount due as CULA is the registered owner of the vehicle. CULA will forward the tax bill to you for payment to the town/city directly.

How do I pay my excise tax?

You may pay the bill through the town/city’s online portal, by mailing a check, or in person.

What happens if I do not pay the excise tax?

Failure to pay taxes or fees associated with your vehicle is a breach of your lease agreement. It may result in penalties and/or interest charges. It may also result in your final lease payment being significantly higher than expected.

What should I do if I do not receive my excise tax bill?

You will typically receive the bill in the months of February or March. If you do not receive it, please contact CULA at 800-878-5400 ext. 0. You may also contact your local tax authority for billing and payment inquiries. It is your responsibility to ensure timely payment even if the bill is not delivered.
